Painter Digital Watercolor Brushes: |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Painter 8's new digital watercolor brushes mimic Painter 6's watercolor brushes. While working on the images "Rita and Jacek" and "Alex and Jacek", I developed a number of brushes that I echo Painter 6's "simple water" watercolor brush. See also, "Nimbus" which shows a number of different brushes in use by layer at the bottom of the page.
Note: Because I do my preparatory work in Photoshop, generally in Painter, I work with "clone color" set to 'on' so all of these brushes have clone color on by default. Feel free to turn clone color off and explore your own choice of colors. I started with Painter 8's "new simple water" Digital Water Color brush and modified a number of different settings. The primary modification was to change the "Dab Type" from "circular" to "static bristle". I also changed the "Bristle" settings from the default thickness=25, clumpiness=50, hair scale=500, scale/size=0 to thickness=50, clumpiness=50, hair scale=200, scale/size=0. Additionally, I found that the "wet fringe" setting (in "Digital Water Color" in the Brush Creator) played an important role in how "grainy" the brush stroke appeared--the lower the setting the 'smoother' the stroke. These brushes use a setting of anywhere between 10 and 26. "expression" and "Color Expression" settings were also modified. "resaturation" (in "Well" in the Brush Creator) was modified, varying from 25 to 100 depending on the brush. With clone color set to 'on', "resaturation" appears to control how closely a stroke follows the clone source. The lower the number, the greater the 'variability' of the stroke. The higher the number, the closer the stroke follows the clone source. I'm not sure what impact "resaturation" has when clone color is not set to 'on'. You may download my brushes individually or all of the brushes in the zip/exe files below. Below are examples of each of the 9 brushes I've developed. I hope you find them useful. |

Recreating Painter 6's Simple Water watercolor brush in Painter 7: |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Continuing the quest to replicate Painter 6's Simple Water watercolor brush, I decided to reinstall Painter 6 and create an image using the brush and then, using Painter 7 attempt to recreate the brush. I wanted to keep the settings the same between the Painter versions to reduce the variables. The image work is not a finished product but more of quick brushwork, just something to work from, to attempt to match.
In Painter 6, I got the start of a pleasing image using the following settings: opacity=29%, grain=100%, brush size=2.5 and I chose the "pointed profile" brush tip (leftmost top row brush profile, the pointy one). All other settings were at the default values. I used medium tooth paper, clone colors ON. These settings were also used in Painter 7. What was varied was the "Water" settings. I also did not modify the contrast setting for the medium tooth paper and all brushes had "Accurate Diffusion" turn OFF. I ended up with 14 iterations which I narrowed down to 6. Two are very close and I couldn't decide which one to put in so I've included both. The other 4 are just kind of fun and so I included those also. I have created both an "exe" file (for pc users) and a "zip" file (for mac users as I understand that Aladdin's Expander/Unstuffit will unstuff zip files) with a brush category "tlbsw647" (as in tlb's simple water 6 for 7). There is a jpg category icon also (tlbsw647.jpg). Download the exe or zip, expand it, copy the brush category jpg and the brush folder to Painter 7\Brushes\Painter Brushes. |

Previous experiments for Painter 7 watercolor brushes: |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
I have been experimenting with Painter 7's watercolor brushes and have come up with 2 that might possibly work similarly to the Painter 6 simple water brush. They both require a light touch.
The first brush "tlb simple circular" is based on the circular dab type and is a bit wetter in look and feel than the second brush "tlb simple camel" which is based on the camel hair dab type. Both have "accurate diffusion" turned off as I found that it made the brush more grainy. |
